Dealing With Stress NLP Style

Stress is a consequence of a person not being able to respond positively or appropriately to threats whether they are physical, emotional as well as real or imagined.

When it comes to the body, stress creates an alarmed state where the body produces adrenaline and creates a resistance that is short term. A person’s body will then feel exhaustion, irritability, not be able to concentrate as well as their muscles tightening up.  The result is typically a headache or elevated heart rate but stress can also lead to a multitude of other things.

Increasing ones stress level increases productivity, but only up to a certain point.  When we are under too much stress or long term stress the nervous system sensing the continual  pressure on the body will continue to supply an excessive amount of stress hormones into the system. These hormones effect everything from heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, and your metabolism.  When the body experiences increased levels of these hormones over an extended time it begins to wear down, leaving a person feeling exhausted, fatigued and overwhelmed. The bodies immune system begins to wear down, our ability to think  clearly fades, and many other medical conditions can arise from being over stressed.

In order to reduce stress, you need to learn how to cope with it in a healthy and positive manner. You might have to adjust it and play around with it a little to find the perfect paradise but you will eventually get it. Once you do, relate a color to it. What color does this perfect place remind you of? When you have it, remember it and then surround yourself in it. How does it make you feel? If it still evokes the same feeling as your perfect scenario, you have the right color. This is the color that is yours and you can use it anytime you feel stressed.

Next, think of a time when you were slightly stressed. Turn it into a picture as well. Take the picture and move it back a little and see how you feel. Move it back a little farther now and see how you feel now. Keep moving it back until you are no longer stressed about it. This is an example of the person who is stressed taking control of their stress.

Now, choose a situation where you were even more stressed. You will want to do the same thing but take your time with it. As more stress is added, it is sometimes harder to work with. Do not force the change but rather work with it until something works. You can do anything you want to the picture. You can move it away, shrink it, make a gel coating over the picture with your resource color you created or simply cover the stressful areas with the color. Change it to make it different until you feel good about it. Some people make the picture disappear while others transform it completely and decide to keep it. Make sure to replace the void with your resource color if you decide to rid yourself of the picture completely. It is never good to leave a void in your thoughts.

The whole idea is to be in control of your thoughts. Relaxing and focusing on one specific item and allowing yourself a comfort zone helps overcome stress.
